mutt, you
   A reasonably friendly insult, applied mainly to American males. It is a short form of ‘mutton-head’, and was used for people before being transferred to mongrel dogs. It is roughly equivalent to ‘you fool’, especially when it becomes ‘you dumb mutt’, as in Rabbit Redux, by John Updike. A Salute to the Great McCarthy, by Barry Oakley, has one Australian man saying to another: ‘You look like a Dickens character, you silly mutt.’
